On Easter Monday 20th April 1987 the Cobblers hosted Southend United on our way to the 4th Division Championship. Southend were rivals for a few years in the 80's but Graham Carr always seemed to have the Indian sign over them, this continued with a 2-1 victory with Richard Hill and Keith McPherson scoring the goals. This was the fourth meeting with Southend this season and we had scored 11 goals against them in the 3 previous games. Southend had a striker called Richard Cadette who always gave us problems and they did get promoted this season, finishing 3rd behind Preston and 19 points behind the Cobblers
We had 3 every presents this season, Peter Gleasure, Keith McPherson and Ian Benjamin
The team that day was Peter Gleasure, Phil Chard, David Logan, Warren Donald, Russ Wilcox, Keith McPherson, Eddie Mc Goldrick, Ian Benjamin, Dave Gilbert, Trevor Morley and Richard Hill.    The attendance was 7,383
